- Douglas Boarding Houses and
the Remarkable Folks Who Managed Them
- Pearl Starr,
daughter of the “Outlaw Queen” Belle Starr, managed a Douglas
boarding house. Pearl was just one of Douglas’ remarkable boarding
house proprietors.
In 1917-18, Douglas’ civilian population was almost
18,000 people – thousands more than today. The town’s eastern edge was Dolores
Avenue – the city occupied less than half the ground it does now. So …
Q. Where did all those people live?
A. In more than 50 establishments that provided “furnished rooms.”
Learning about a few of the people who managed those 50-plus boarding houses,
apartments and hotels is the same as walking past them and glancing into one of
their windows. It’s a glimpse of Douglas history.
